Spinecare Introduction
The Doctor of Chiropractic

The Chiropractic Physicians Approach to Back Problems:

Most chiropractic physicians believe that the most conservative approach should always be considered first and should be done in a way to try to maximize the patient’s ability to recover.   The chiropractic physician strives to enhance health and physical performance.   Most chiropractor/chiropractic physicians believe in the use of pharmaceutical intervention and/or surgery only when it is absolutely necessary.  Chiropractic physicians agree with the scientific literature that most chronic back disorders begin with dysfunction and adverse tissue changes which over time contrite to the development of chronic more symptomatic degenerative changes.  They are an important part of the spinecare team.  They work with other spine specialist such as orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and pain management specialists.

Diagnostic Methods used by the Chiropractic Physician

The chiropractor or chiropractic physicians rely upon the diagnostic process, as do medical physicians.  The first goal of the chiropractic physician is the same as any physician, which is to identify the problem(s), more specifically to identify the area of compromise and the cause of the problem.  The chiropractic physician like the medical physician has the ability to order a variety of different diagnostic tests in order to accomplish this.  The most important step in the evaluation process is taking an accurate history and performing a thorough physical examination.  The chiropractic physician may proceed with one or more imaging studies such as X-ray, CT, and/or MRI to further evaluate the condition.  They also use blood testing and special electrodiagnostic or nerve testing.  Chiropractic physicians may have to order tests to assess other organ systems in an attempt to rule out complications associated with neurological compromise and to also rule out problems which may make mimic a spine condition.

Special Skills of the Doctor of Chiropractic

The chiropractic physician is well trained and skilled in the evaluation and treatment of neurological and musculoskeletal (orthopedic) disorders.  They have extensive training in care of the spine.  From a treatment perspective the chiropractic physician is particularly well skilled in spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) or sometime refered to as the spinal adjustment.  There are also highly skilled at manipulation of non-spine (extremity) joints. Chiropractors have more training and experience in these approaches than any other health care provider.  The chiropractic physician provides a wide variety of additional non-surgical approaches to musculoskeletal and neurological conditions as well as general health care.  Other therapeutic approaches include physiotherapy, massage therapy, exercise prescription, dietary modification, physical rehabilitation, neuro-rehabilitation, self-help recommendations, work ergonomic modifications, exercise therapy, and nutritional approaches.

The Chiropractors Role in Wellness

Doctors of chiropractic believe that prevention is the key to health and wellness.  They utilize many methods to help promote wellness which include health screenings, patient education, public education, as well as the promotion of good posture, exercise and healthy lifestyle changes.  Some chiropractic physicians offer maintenance care.  There are national organizations   which help chiropractic physicians reach the public to promote wellness Examples of these organizations include the American Chiropractic association (ACA), the American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP), the International Spine Association (ISA) the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Heart Association (AHA).
